That's the burning question I get the most as an Esthetician, and yet, there is still so many people that are not wearing it😱
Did you know for every day that you do not wear sunscreen your skin ages at a faster rate and it increases skin discoloration!
UVA & UVB rays in sunlight are the biggest culprits implicated in the skin's extrinsic aging process! so if aging skin is a concern for you and you want to keep a youthful appearance, sun protection is an absolute must. This may come as a surprise but, UVA has the ability to penetrate the clouds and window glass in cars and your home, causing damage to the skin.UVA rays are rays that age the skin and UVB rays are rays that burn the skin. UVA rays mostly penetrate the upper skin layers or the epidermis, UVA rays have the ability to penetrate the skin more deeply effecting the lower dermal layers.
About 50 percent of UV damage is from the formation of free radicals, which are harmful to skin cells. The rest of the damage is from UV light causing direct cell injury and DMA damage. UV light has been shown to activate enzymes that break down collagen and damage the skin's support structure, making it sag or deepening wrinkles. These enzymes also have the ability to prevent new collagen production. This results in sagging skin, wrinkles and thin skin.
Myth: I don't need sunscreen because I'm African American, so I have a lot of melanin in my skin!
Actually there are some important differences in skin of color or ethnic skin. The pigment melanin, which gives our skin its color, is present in higher quantities in those with dark skin. Melanin absorbs UV light and has the ability to better block a percentage of free radical damage but there is still a need for sunscreen....
